Looking For New Router Bits? Learn About Your Options

by Jonathan Carroll

One of the first things novice are often amazed by is that there are so many router bits to choose from. When you pair this expansive range with limited knowledge, it can make the process of choosing the right bit for the task seem overwhelming. Taking some time to learn about some of the more common, or staple, bits can make this process much easier.

Straight

The straight router bit is one that every professional needs to have in their arsenal. As its name suggests, this bit creates a clean, straight cut, which can be used to cut entirely through an object or to create small grooves or inlays for fitting more than one piece together. Straight bits are available in a wide range of dimensions to meet your needs.

Flush-Trim

The flush trim router bit is designed to trim, or edge up, the corners of the object, which is an important process when you are trying to join more than one piece together. One of the more unique things about this bit is that it can be used with a pattern. For larger volume products, using a pattern will ensure that all your pieces are uniform and precise.

Rabbeting

Rabbeting bits have a small circular-like device at their base that rotates quickly when in it is in operation. This circular style is primarily used for the purpose of cutting around edges or other angled areas of an object without altering the natural shape. This design can also sometimes be used for the purpose of smoothing out a particular area; however, this does usually require a higher skill level.

Edge-Forming

The edge-forming bit does exactly what its name suggests, it helps create smooth and precise edges. However, it differs from a straight bit in that it can also be used with patterns. The use of patterns allows you to add a more decorative element to a piece, such as an S shape profile. This bit is generally reserved for the finishing process.

Chamfer

The chamfer bit is similar to an edge-forming bit in that it can enhance the aesthetics of a piece by adding a decorative element. However, they are limited in that they can only create a bevel like design. In addition to cosmetic purposes, some professionals also use this bit to create a bevel pattern when it is necessary to make two pieces fit together.

The more you know about the type of router bits available, the easier it is to make your selection.
