Learning About Industrial Safety Equipment

A Revamped Approach To Safety Within A Warehouse Setting

by Jonathan Carroll

Sensors that detect motion and supportive safety aids will protect pedestrians and prevent them from being injured by mobile machinery that is used in an industrial setting. If there have been a couple of incidents or close calls that have occurred within your factory, consider revamping the safety measures that you currently require your employees to uphold.

Personal Responsibility And The Line Of Vision

Any type of safety enhancement that you choose to utilize within your facility should never be used as a replacement to responsible mechanical usage and adherence to company regulations. Each employee who has access to the warehouse flooring, inventory storage setup, and packaging and shipping staging areas should be advised of the rules that you have implemented.

Personal responsibility involves paying close attention to what is going on and avoiding the use of earbuds or other devices that could hinder one's ability to hear clearly. An individual's line of vision can be affected by the overstacking of boxes or pallets or by the design of a piece of heavy-duty equipment.

A System And Supporting Materials

A detection system uses motion sensor technology and an alarm or a series of blinking lights. Detection equipment is designed to protect anyone who is actively moving around a facility. Equipment will detect movement within a targeted area. The movement will trigger a detection device to activate. Consider the number of employees who will be working during each shift and the number of machines or mechanical equipment that will be moving about the premises.

Any type of machine that is going to be operated during a shift can be connected to a detection system. Machinery that contains extended arms that lift heavy items and machinery that traverses the premises should be connected to the detection equipment that comes with a protection system.

Many protection systems use a combination of cameras and radar. These two components will capture images and relay information to a machine operator or a pedestrian who is within close proximity to an active transport vehicle or piece of machinery.

People who work inside of your plant will each need to wear personal gear that contains a sensor. This gear will interact with the equipment that is on a piece of machinery. Supporting materials that will enhance the use of a pedestrian detection system include signage and cones, concentrated lighting, and personal protection gear (hard hats, bright-colored vests, etc.).
